In meeting the different academic needs of a diverse ELL population, Red Clay offers different instructional programs. All students are able to participate in the regular classroom, but are also able to be in specialized programs to fit their needs. For students whose primary language of dominance is Spanish, there is a bilingual program which includes a dual language program. There is also a Structured English Immersion program. For students whose primary language is not Spanish, the district is able to offer an ESL pull-out program. There is also an ESL sheltered program that is offered at the high school level for all students regardless of their home language.
During the summer, the ELL Office offers an enrichment program for upcoming ELLs in first and second grade that attend ELL schools. A specific number of students who attend Baltz, Marbrook and Mote elementary schools will be invited to attend the summer enrichment program which provides the opportunity for ELLs to be exposed to part of the Reading curriculum of the upcoming year. Likewise students who are upcoming first and second graders and who attend Lewis Dual Language Magnet School are able to be exposed to the Spanish Reading Curriculum of the upcoming year. Classes are small with no more than 12 students per teacher. Twenty days of summer school gives children with low language proficiency level the opportunity to build background knowledge and confidence in the curriculum that they will encounter during the next school year.
